Christchurch Engine Centre is a joint venture of two pioneers and leaders of their industry - Pratt & Whitney and Air New Zealand. We are specialised in the overhaul and repair of the Pratt & Whitney V2500-A5 engines. The services of our facility are trusted and valued by various commercial airlines around the world.

History

The history of our facility began 1948 with the National Airways Corporation (NAC) which was New Zealand's national domestic airline until 1978. The NAC network covered several destinations across New Zealand operated by a fleet consisting of various types of aircrafts. The NAC facility in Christchurch completed engine overhaul and repair work for following engines:

• Gypsy Queen 3 engines (for De Havilland DH.89 Dominie and DH.114 Heron aircrafts)
• Pratt & Whitney Radial engines R985, R1340 and R1830 (for Lockheed Electra 10A, De Havilland Beaver, North American Harvard and Douglas DC3 aircrafts)
• Rolls Royce Dart engine (for Vickers Viscount, Folker F27 Friendship, Hawker Siddeley 748 and Argosy aircrafts)
• Pratt & Whitney JT8D Standard engine (for Boeing 727 and 737 and Douglas DC9 aircrafts)

1978 the National Airways Corporation merged with Air New Zealand and became the carrier’s domestic arm.  The engine overhaul services in Christchurch continued to operate under Air New Zealand.  

As years go by, the facility takes on more external work and becomes a trusted service provider for airlines around the world. The new millennium brings big changes: 2001 Christchurch Engine Centre becomes a joint venture between Air New Zealand and Pratt & Whitney and four years later in 2005 the new V2500 engine is introduced. Only fours years after the new engine type was introduced to our workshop, we celebrated the 100th successfully completed V2500 overhaul. 2012 the JT8D engine is retired, and the workshop becomes specialised on the V2500.

1968 – 1st JT8D Overhauled

1978 – NAC merged with Air New Zealand

1996 – 1000th JT8D and 1st JT8D-200

2001 – Joint Venture formed between Air New Zealand and Pratt & Whitney (PWANZ trading as Christchurch Engine Centre)

2004 – V2500 Facility & Test Cell Opened

2005 – 1st V2500 Overhaul

2012 – JT8D Product Retired

2014 – Consolidated Facility Opens, Rolls Royce Dart Product Retired

2015 – Future GTF Capability announced

2020 – 1000th V2500 Overhaul Performed

2021 – Celebrated 20 Year Anniversary as Joint Venture between Pratt & Whitney and Air New Zealand
